Padmavat (or Padmawat) is an epic poem written in 1540 by Sufi poetMalik Muhammad Jayasi,[1] who wrote it in the Awadhi language,[2][3] and originally in the Persian Nastaʿlīq script. It is the oldest extant text among the important works in Awadhi.[5] A famous piece of Sufi literature from the period, it relates an allegorical fictional story about Delhi SultanAlauddin Khalji's desire for the titular Padmavati, the Queen of Chittor based on historic conquest of chittor.[6] Alauddin Khalji and Padmavati's husband Ratan Sen are historical figures, whereas Padmavati may have been a fictional character.[7]

Legendary queen of Chittor, Padmâvatî

During his honeymoon journeyto India, Albert Rousselvisited the ruined city of Chittor in Rajputana, currently located in Rajasthan. That city had a very colorful and long history, and once he returned home to Paris he approached his friend Louis Laloy to write a libretto based on the story of the legendary queen of Chittor, Padmâvatî. Her story had been preserved in a medieval poem by Malik Muhammad Jayasi and turned into the novel La légende de Padmanîby Théodore-Marie Pavie. Set in 13th-century India, the plot centers on the princely ruler Ratan-Sen and his beautiful wife, Padmâvatî. When the Mongol sultan Alaouddin—ruler of Delhi—besieges the city of Chittor, he asks to be granted a glimpse of Padmâvatî in exchange for peace. Ratan-Sen reluctantly agrees, and when Padmâvatî unveils at his request, Alaouddin instantly falls in love with her.
