The middle of three children, McGinest attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where he was a two sport phenom, garnering all-state honors in football and basketball. On the gridiron, he earned All-American recognition from Super Prep, Blue Chip and Tom Lemming magazines and was selected to countless all-star teams, earning all-city, all-state, and all-region honors as a linebacker in 1989. He totaled 107 tackles, including 18 sacks, two fumble recoveries, four passes defensed, including an interception, and blocked four kicks as a senior. On the courts, he earned Long Beach Press-Telegram "Best in the West," All-CIF Southern Section and all-league honors while averaging 14 points per game during the 1989-90 season.

From 1990 to 1993, McGinest played football at the University of Southern California. He wore number 55 and carried on the legacy of the jersey established by his predecessor, All-American linebacker

Willie McGinest is a retired defensive end who most notably stood out for the New England Patriots. After being an All-American at USC, McGinest was selected by the Patriots with the fourth pick in the 1994 NFL Draft. He was a star for a decade in New England earning two trips to the Pro Bowl. McGinest also helped establish their dynasty, winning three Super Bowls with the team. He set an NFL record with 16 career postseason sacks and ranks third in Patriots history with 78 sacks. McGinest was selected to New England's All-1990s and All-2000s Team. He is also a member of the New England Patriots Hall of Fame. McGinest spent the final three years of his career with the Cleveland Browns. In retirement, he has worked in broadcasting, founded his own entertainment company and been a restaurant franchiseer.

William Lee McGinest Jr. (born December 11, 1971) is an American former professional football player who was a linebacker for 15 seasons in the National Football League (NFL), primarily with the New England Patriots. He played college football for the USC Trojans and was selected fourth overall by the Patriots in the 1994 NFL draft. During his 12 seasons with the team, he was named to two Pro Bowls and won three Super Bowl titles. McGinest also holds the postseason record for sacks. For his accomplishments in New England, he was inducted to the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2015.
