“There is a difference between being tired, and exhausted.” A sentence which rings through when describing Ric Charlesworth, and his approach to sporting pursuits and life itself.

Charlesworth is a sporting icon, both for his playing efforts and later his coaching successes.

During his sport, he studied Medicine and worked in Politics, but he will forever be known as The Coach. He specialises in knowing what triggers people (himself included) to be the best, and be their best.

After retiring from coaching the Kookaburras in 2014, Charlesworth continues to spend his time working, part-time motivational speaker and full-time Dad. 

Sport – as a player: Charlesworth was an avid cricketer. He played for 8 years in the WA state team. But his first love was hockey,  in the National team playing 18 years for WA, and National teams for 17 years. Throughout this period, he was selected for 5 and went to 4 Olympics with the Australian team.

Richard Ian CharlesworthAO (born 6 February 1952) is an Australian sports coach and former politician. He played first-class cricket for Western Australia and international field hockey for the Kookaburras (the Australian national team), winning a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics and winning the World Cup in 1986. Charlesworth served as a federal member of parliament from 1983 to 1993, representing the Labor Party. After leaving politics, he was appointed coach of the Hockeyroos (the national women's field hockey team), leading them to Olympic gold medals in 1996 and 2000. Charlesworth later coached the Kookaburras from 2009 to 2014, and has also worked in consulting roles with the New Zealand national cricket team, the Australian Institute of Sport, and the Fremantle Football Club (an Australian football team).

He is also a medical doctor, completing a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Western Australia in 1976 and a former federal politician, a diverse and successful Member of Parliament.



Greatest Sporting Achievements

Ric Charlesworth became “Western Australian Sportsman of the Year” three times, “West Australian Sports Champions of the Year Award for ‘Coach of the Year’ from 1994 to 2000” and was awarded the “Advance Australia Award” in 1984, “Order of Australia” medal in 1987 and Player of the Tournament in the 1986 World Cup. He won the Olympian’s Medal, an annual award given to the player judged by umpires to be the fairest and best in men’s division in Western Australia. He was also named “Australian Coaching Council ‘Team Coach of the Year’ Award” seven times
