Carol Arthur, Actress in ‘Blazing Saddles’ and Wife of Dom DeLuise, Dies at 85
Carol Arthur, the actor who appeared in Blazing Saddles and three other Mel Brooks films and on Broadway opposite Dick Van Dyke and Lauren Bacall and widow of comedian Dom DeLuise, has died. She was 85.
Arthur died Sunday at the Mary Pickford House at the Motion Picture & Television Fund home in Woodland Hills after an 11-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease, her family announced. She had lived there since 2015.
Arthur is probably best remembered for her turn as Rock Ridge schoolmarm Harriett Van Johnson in Brooks’ Blazing Saddles (1974). In one scene at a town council meeting, she takes the stage to read a letter she has written to the governor expressing displeasure with his choice of sheriff (Cleavon Little).

Carol Arthur, the actress known for her collaborations with Mel Brooks and the widow of comedian Dom DeLuise, died Sunday at the Mary Pickford House at the Motion Picture & Television Fund in Los Angeles. She was 85. A spokesperson for the MPTF confirmed the news to EW.
Arthur famously appeared in Brooks' 1974 comedy Blazing Saddles as the schoolmarm Harriet Johnson, followed by small but memorable roles in three more of his projects: Silent Movie, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and Dracula: Dead and Loving It.
"Sad to hear of Carol Arthur's passing," Brooks tweeted Monday. "She was so great in Blazing Saddles as Harriett Johnson the over-the-top, outspoken schoolmarm. She will be missed."
Arthur was born Carol Arata in Hackensack, N.J., on Aug. 4, 1935. She and DeLuise met in Provincetown, Mass., in 1964 while working in various stage productions. They married a year later and had three sons: Peter, Michael, and David. All three are actors.

Early life
Arthur was born in Hackensack, New Jersey and raised in nearby East Rutherford, the daughter of Mildred (née Foehl) and Peter Arata, a police officer. She graduated from East Rutherford High School, where she edited the school paper and performed on stage.
Career

One of her more notable credits was as the daughter of George Burns' character in The Sunshine Boys (1975). She also guest-starred on many television shows from the mid-1970s to the mid-2000s, including The Dom DeLuise Show, Emergency!, Sanford and Son, Rhoda, Alice, Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories, St. Elsewhere, and 7th Heaven.
During the late-1970s and early-1980s, Arthur appeared as "Safety Sadie", the spokeswoman for the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in several television and radio public service announcements.
