Matt Hickerson wrote this book for one purpose: to inspire his two daughters to read and write. Matt and his wife read to their daughters religiously as the girls were growing up -- in fact, even in the womb! It was a nightly ritual, and they never missed a night of reading to their kids. As the girls got older, they started to read and write on their own, so Matt thought it would be great to give them something to read that he wrote. Matt has a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University and has been published in such places as The New York Times -- pretty boring stuff for kids. So he took advantage of his commuting time on the Long Island Rail Road into Manhattan and wrote "A Ball in the Woods." His youngest daughter, who was in third grade at the time, was ecstatic at the prospect of seeing the book in print. She gave every kid in her class a copy and was so proud -- which was the best payoff in the world to Matt for writing the book.
