Speaker Spotlight: Dato Dr. Ken Yeang

Skyscrapers towering overhead, with roof gardens and greenery covering walls to stairs, built with self-sufficient water recycling systems and sunshade louvers forming the most majestic shapes. Buildings which are ecocities in themselves. That is the future of skyscrapers.

Considered one of the founding fathers of sustainable architecture, Dato Ken Yeang specialises in bioclimatic skyscrapers and is also a widely published author in the subject matter. Some of his books and articles pioneering ‘vertical green urbanism’ and passive low-energy skyscrapers such as "Design with Nature", "The Skyscrpaer: Bioclimatically Considered" and "The Green Skyscraper: The Basis of Deigning Ecological Sustainable Buildings" are widely read and studied.

Born in Malaysia in 1948, Dato Ken Yeang’s sensitive and delicate melding of bioclimatic techniques and daring vertical landscaping can be seen in buildings designed by Hamzah & Yeang, his firm based in Kuala Lumpur, all over the world. He studied Architecture at the Architectural Association School (AA)

The Fellowship is awarded in recognition of Dr Yeang's international distinction as a leading proponent of ecological and low-energy design, sustainability and master planning.

An ecologist and architect — or 'ecoarchitect' — based in Kuala Lumpur, the Guardian calls Dr Yeang the "world's leading green skyscraper architect" and declares him to be "one of the people who could save the planet". Dr Yeang lectures internationally, and is frequently profiled in the media; you can see many of his interviews and keynote speeches on YouTube. He has completed over 200 built projects, and his use of green walls and roofs, photo voltaics, solar filters and shading and cooling mechanisms have earned him numerous awards.

Amongst his best-known buildings are his own 'Roof-Roof' house in Kuala Lumpur, the Great Ormond Street children's Hospital extension, and the National Library in Singapore.

Wolfson President, Jane Clarke, recognised Dr Yeang's longstanding association with the College — he is an alumnus

Ken Yeang is an architect, ecologist and author known for his work in the field of ecological design. He is recognised as a pioneer in sustainable architecture. Yeang’s approach involves integrating ecology-based principles into architectural structures as Applied Ecology, promoting environmentally sensitive, carbon neutral and energy-efficient solutions.

His innovative ideas focus on creating buildings that harmonise synergistically with nature while addressing contemporary environmental challenges. He is among the few architects who does research, designs, builds and writes.

Yeang trained at the Architectural Association (London). His Cambridge doctorate was published as ‘Designing With Nature’ by McGraw-Hill (1985).

His Awards Include:
- The Aga Khan Award
- Prinz Claus Award
- Auguste Perret Award (from International Union of Architects)
- Liang SiCheng International Award (from Architectural Society of China)
- Gold Medal (from Malaysian Institute of Architects).

In recognition of his green architecture, the Guardian named him one of the 50 people who could
