MCALLEN, Texas – McAllen Mayor Jim Darling was praised at national meeting of Index, the maquiladora trade association, in Mexico City for “standing up to President Trump.”
At a McAllen Economic Development Corporation board meeting on Thursday, Index Reynosa President Enrique Castro said he offered the congratulatory remarks at the Mexico City event.
“I wanted to congratulate Mayor Darling. During President Trump’s visit to McAllen last week, when they were talking about the wall, he was the only one to stand up and say, hey, our community thinks differently,” Castro said.
Darling was in high-demand during the president’s visit to the Texas-Mexico border region. On CNN, ITV and other news outlets from around the world, Darling challenged the notion that the border region was plagued by violence and in a state of crisis.

American politician
Javier Villalobos is an American attorney and politician who is the 21st and current mayor of McAllen, Texas. He won election in June 2021 and was sworn in on June 14, 2021.[1][2]
Education
Villalobos received a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University, and a Juris Doctor degree from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law.[3]
Career
Villalobos spent 26 years as an attorney in the areas of Criminal, Family, and Government/Administrative law.[4] He served as chairman of the Hidalgo County GOP, provided legal advice to local governments and mounted an unsuccessful campaign for McAllen City Commission in 2015. James E. ‘Jim’ Darling, mayor of the City of McAllen, is an experienced public servant; he considers that a challenge is an opportunity that brings new ideas to solve problems. He is the 20th mayor of the City of McAllen.

Mayor Darling was born James E. Darling in Rochester, New York to parents Ralph Darling and Doris Essig. He said, “My mom was divorced and I was raised by my stepdad, John Essig, for 50 years before he passed away.”
