George W. Johnson

George Washington Johnson (c. October 1846 – January 23, 1914) was an American singer and pioneer sound recording artist. Johnson was the first African American recording star of the phonograph. His most popular songs were "The Whistling Coon" and "The Laughing Song".

He married Maratha Ellen Arrowhood on 17 March 1870, in Benton, Iowa, United States. They were the parents of at least 2 daughters. He lived in Ravalli, Montana, United States in 1900 and Township 4 Stevens, Ravalli, Montana, United States in 1910. He died on 15 March 1915, in Stevensville, Ravalli, Montana, United States, at the age of 71, and was buried in Stevensville, Ravalli, Montana, United States.
