WHEN little Yanet Fuentes Torres was a youngster she had a dream - to dance and travel the world.

And as a star of the Cuban dance show Lady Salsa, she has more than realised that dream.

Plucked from the National School of Art and Dance in Havana at the age of 18 to play in the all-Cuban show, she has spent the last five years as a lead dancer.

Now 23, she is next week adding Birmingham to her list of stage appearances as she steps out at the Alexandra Theatre with the sizzling show.

"I did not know that this was how it would all happen but I hoped it would," she says. "I always said I wanted to be a famous dancer and dance across the whole world. And now my dream has come true I am so proud."

Yanet has travelled the world as Lady Salsa has toured the UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and much of Europe. Her dance skills are much in demand in t

Passionate Latin performer who wishes her family back in Havana could see her on the show.

Hailing from Cuba, Yanet began her journey in dance as a gymnastics student, following in her parents' footsteps as sportspeople. She didn't like it though, and naturally segued into dancing. She spent seven years at the National School of Art & Dance in Havana, Cuba and, since coming to the UK, has worked in many different jobs.

Some of these include: two West End Musicals, TV appearances (Generation Game, This Morning, The Paul O'Grady Show), starring in music videos for Alicia Keys, Craig David, ABS and Tinchy Stryder and N'Dubz, as well as appearing in TV commercials for Sanex, Nokia and Atec.

She is a three-time Tropicana World Open Salsa Champion and travels the world teaching and performing her own Latin dance shows.

Yanet was convinced by a couple of friends to audition for SYTYCD and, after some pushing, came to believe it would be a great experience for her as a dancer.

Only Room for One Latin Diva?

Yanet Fuentes was the only Latina who qualified for the live rounds of BBC1’s Saturday night prime-time talent showSo You Think You Can Dance, in which judges Arlene Philipps, Nigel Lythgoe, Louise Redknapp and hip-hop choreographer Sisco Gomez, help us pick 'Britain’s favourite dancer'. She is in fact the only Latin American to have qualified for the finals of any mainstream talent show to date.

For those of you who know Yanet’s work, either from the original dance company she came to the UK as part of or from subsequent tours she has done around the country, her breezing through auditions would have come as no surprise. For those who don’t, Yanet possesses that enviable combination on absolute control and freedom, technique and flare and grace and sexiness. She came through the ranks of Cuba's notoriously rigorous schooling, where the rich African dance heritage is nurtured alongside the Russian-influenced classical discipline to produce a unique effect and, consequently, some of the world’s best dancers; Carlos Acosta to name but one.
