Sarney, José (1930–)

José Sarney was the president of Brazil from 1985 to 1990. He was born José Ribamar Ferreira Araújo Costa in Pinheiro, Maranhão on April 24, 1930, and received a law degree in 1953. From childhood he was referred to as Zé do Sarney. For electoral purposes, in 1958 he adopted the name José Sarney and legally changed his name to José Sarney da Costa in 1965.

Sarney began his political career in 1954 as an alternate federal deputy from the National Democratic Union (UDN) and assumed the deputy position in 1956. He was reelected in 1958 and 1962. Although part of the reformist and nationalist wing of the UDN, he made his peace with the military government established in 1964. In 1965 he became the governor of his home state on the Arena ticket, the same party that brought him to the federal senate in 1970 and 1978. José Ribamar Ferreira de Araújo Costa was educated as lawyer in the University of Maranhão. Elected an alternate deputy from Maranhão (1954), Costa temporarily filled a vacancy in the federal Chamber of Deputies until he entered the Chamber as a permanent deputy (1959-1966). When the military regime instituted a government-controlled two-party system, Costa, who legally adopted Sarney as part of his family name (1965), joined the pro-government National Renewal Alliance Party (Aliança Renovadora Nacional [Arena]). He won the election as governor of the State of Maranhão (31 Jan 1966 - 15 Mar 1971) and after completing his term he took a seat in the Federal Senate (1971-1985). Remaining loyal to the military government, Sarney was installed as president of Arena (1979) and later as president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) (1980-1984). José Sarney de Araújo Costa (Portuguese pronunciation:[ʒuˈzɛsaʁˈnejdʒiaɾaˈuʒuˈkɔstɐ]; born José Ribamar Ferreira de Araújo Costa; 24 April 1930) is a Brazilian politician, lawyer, and writer who served as 31st president of Brazil from 1985 to 1990.[2] He briefly served as the 20th vice president of Brazil for a month between March and April 1985.

Sarney was a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1955 until 1966 and of the Senate from 1971 until 1985. He was also the Governor of Maranhão from 1966 until 1970. During the Brazilian military dictatorship, Sarney affiliated himself with the government party, ARENA, becoming the president of the party in 1979. Sarney joined the dissenters, and was instrumental in the creation of the Liberal Front Party.
