José María Hipólito Figueres Ferrer (1906-1990) was a Costa Rican coffee rancher, politician, and agitator who served as President of Costa Rica on three occasions between 1948 and 1974. A militant socialist, Figueres is one of the most important architects of modern Costa Rica.

Moreover, during the 1950s and 1960s, he stood almost alone as the champion of democracy and economic and social reform in Central America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.
Born in rural San Ramón shortly after his parents had emigrated from Spain, Figueres had little formal education beyond the secondary level.
