How did this man with whom I had a profound, direct encounter become known as the guru and expert leader of myofascial release? Pain, desperation, and life experience are all behind his development. The journey was instigated by a weightlifting injury that triggered severe back pain. A myriad of eastern and western modalities offered some relief but were always short lived. As an athlete and physical therapist, pain stood in the way of living life fully. Out of desperation, John agreed to a fusion of his spine which again offered some relief but no permanent change in symptoms. With the realization that no one would help him but himself, he began to listen to his intuition, or gut sense, which led him down the path of self treatment and accessing his body’s wisdom and natural healing instincts. Years later, we are beneficiaries of John’s perseverance and persistence regarding his personal journey with pain and his professional journey into the realm of alternative therapy. If you’re familiar with English football, you could be forgiven for thinking John Barnes is a sports pundit, New Order backup singer, and ex-Liverpool and Newcastle United “football” (aka soccer) player.
He is, of course, so if that’s who you’re looking for – you might want to try the Liverpool FC Hall of Fame for further information. But for the purposes of this article, we’re talking about the renowned physical therapist and founder of the Myofascial Release Approach®, John F Barnes.

John F Barnes is a trailblazer in the field of manual therapy, including physical and massage therapy. He has been successfully treating patients and relieving their chronic pain using his renouned Myofascial Release Approach® since 1960 (over half a century).
