Sidney Poitier (PWAH-tyay;[1] February 20, 1927 – January 6, 2022) was a Bahamian-American actor, film director, activist, and diplomat. In 1964, he was the first Black actor and first Bahamian to win the Academy Award for Best Actor.[2] He received two competitive Golden Globe Awards, a BAFTA Award, and a Grammy Award as well as nominations for two Emmy Awards and a Tony Award. In 1999, he was ranked among the "American Film Institute's 100 Stars".[3][4] Poitier was one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema.[5][6][7]
Poitier's family lived in the Bahamas, then still a Crown colony, but he was born in Miami, Florida, while they were visiting, which automatically granted him U.S. citizenship. She admits that her name has sometimes helped open doors for her, but it has also been a mixed blessing. "I think I got a lot more auditions that way," she told Jet. "There were certainly higher expectations placed on me. And people have pre-conceived notions of me before I walk into a room because they're so familiar with my father. So, that actually works against you a little bit."
Poitier was born in 1973, exactly a decade after her father became the first African-American male to win an Oscar for a lead role, which he earned for his performance in the movie Lilies of the Field. Sydney Tamiia Poitier (PWAH-tyay; born November 15, 1973)[1] is an American-Canadian television and film actress.
Early life and family
Born in Los Angeles, Poitier is the daughter of Bahamian-American actor Sidney Poitier and Canadian actress Joanna Shimkus.[2] Her mother is of Lithuanian Jewish[3] and Irish Catholic descent.[4] She has an older sister, Anika. She also has four older half-sisters, Beverly, Pamela, Sherri, and Gina, from her father's first marriage.[5]
Poitier attended NYU's Tisch School of the Arts where she earned a bachelor's degree in acting.[2] She also studied at Stella Adler Studio of Acting.[6][7]
Poitier and her husband, musician Dorian Heartsong, have one child together, a daughter born in 2015. [8]
