Portanapoli
The actress Sophia Loren is the embodiment of southern Italian beauty and Neapolitan spirit. Especially in her first movies, she played the typical woman from the “popolo di Napoli”, the common people of Naples.
In the Italian originals she speaks with a heavy Neapolitan accent and can be quickly identified as a Neapolitan by her genuine gesture. Distinctive for her acting career was her incidental meeting with the Neapolitan film director, Vittorio De Sica that Sophia Loren described in an interview:
“Perhaps De Sica was really impressed by me, because when he saw me and realized that I am a Neapolitan, he started talking Neapolitan with me and we had a nice conversation (…). He was looking for a young woman to play the role of the pizza maker in the movie L’oro di Napoli (The Gold of Naples), and that became my first role,…”

Sophia Loren: The Story of the Most Iconic Italian Actress
Pozzuoli, a small town near Naples, is about as far from Hollywood as you can get. There is no glitz, no glamor, and its residents have been historically impoverished. Back in the 1940s, this was even more so the case. But, it was here, among the rubble of bomb sites and the blares of sirens, that a star was born.
Sophia Loren’s childhood was defined by a constant struggle for survival; even after the war ended, food and shelter were often in scarce supply. To take her mind away from the hardships her family and so many others were going through, Loren turned to thecinema. During air raids, she would seek refuge in the movie houses of Pozzuoli, which provided her with a veritable escape from the atrocities of daily life during WWII, and the sharp pangs of poverty and hunger. Watching the likes of Rita Hayworth and Greta Garbo in full flair on the silver screen planted a seed early on in Soph

Sophia Loren
Italian actress (born 1934)
Sofia Costanza Brigida Villani Scicolone (Italian:[soˈfiːavilˈlaːniʃʃikoˈloːne]; born 20 September 1934), known professionally as Sophia Loren (lə-REN;[1]Italian:[ˈlɔːren]), is an Italian and French actress, active in her native country and the United States. With a career spanning over 70 years, she is one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema.[2]
Encouraged to enroll in acting lessons after entering a beauty pageant, Loren began her film career at age 16 in 1950. She appeared in several bit parts and minor roles in the early part of the decade, until her five-picture contract with Paramount in 1956 launched her international career. Her film appearances around this time include The Pride and the Passion, Houseboat, and It Started in Naples. During the 1950s, she starred in films as a sexually emancipated persona and was one of the best known sex symbols of the time.
